Silver Spring

In 1842, Francis Preston Blair, who later organized the modern Republican Party, built a 22 room mansion he dubbed "Silver Spring" on a 250 acre homestead adjacent to Washington, DC. Little development occurred until the early 20th Century. By the 1950's, Silver Spring became the busiest retail market between Baltimore and Richmond.

Today, Silver Spring has over 76,000 residents bisected by the Capital Beltway (I-495). The nations capital is served by metro from Silver Spring. Suburban developments spread northward from the DC border along Georgia Ave., New Hampshire Ave., and Colesville Pike.
