Sykesville/Eldersburg

How does the beginnings of Sykesville relate to Napoleon Bonaparte? (see below)

Sykesville was established in 1825 when James Sykes bought 1000 acres from the estate of William Patterson, known as Springfield Estate. The early town would serve as a train stop on the B&O Railroad's main line, with a 47 room hotel and a mill. It's nearby sister city of Eldersburg was established a couple of decades later and straddles the routes 26 and 32 corridors.

Today, the twin towns have a population of over 40,000 people in the southeast corner of Carroll County. Both in 2007 and 2009, Money Magazine listed Eldersburg in its "Top 100 Places To Live".

Now for Napolean... William Patterson's daughter, Betsy married the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte while he was in the states. When he took his bride back to France, Napoleon would not allow the marriage and sent Betsy home. Poor Betsy got divorced a few years later and was the heir to her father's estate, part of which was sold to James Sykes.
